Solar Decathlon: Solar Energy International Contest for October 2005

See summary of renewable energy subsidies

The contest runs until October 16, there have been 18 American universities and the Polytechnic University of Madrid as the only European representative. Each has been designed and built a home that runs exclusively on solar energy. Each house has been transported to the National Mall in Washington DC, and you can visit a village site where the competition is taking place this autumn 2005.

celeberará In November, the International Competition in Galicia Livable Communities

The University Solar Decathlon competition is organized by the Department of Energy of the United States. The intention is to demonstrate how to reconcile the architectural practices with a rational use of energy in a country accustomed to wasting energy. In this case you can only use solar energy efficient technologies and applications that will make our house a home equipped with the comforts of XXI century, but demonstrating that it can respect the health of our mother earth. Bill Clinton will support solar energy.

The solar village will be open from 7 to October 16, 2005. The team houses are open for visiting daily except Oct. 12 when it closed for competition purposes. Final winner will be announced at noon on October 15.

Decathlon: Competition from 10 tests

university teams will compete in ten events that make up the Decathlon and covering aspects such as architectural design, roominess, comfort, energy balance and the like. Include hot water applications, cooling, lighting and other applications. The house can only be supplied with solar energy, but one of the most spectacular and futuristic requirements is that the house should include power for an electric car.

active and passive solar heating, and photovoltaics are the sole source of power supercasa Magic Box. This respects the environment as possible, but adena includes the latest technology for higher comfort of home. Everything in it is controlled automation. Versatility is another key characteristic: it is possible make use of panels to partition the rooms when required and store when not needed. For example, the show moves from its original position to create a patio in summer, warm days. Ultimately leads to their limits in ecology combination of technologies, automation and adaptability.

The English team and representative of Europe, the UPM that participates in the Solar Decathlon 2005 is coordinated by professors from the School of Architecture (ETSAM), the Institute of Solar Energy (IES) and the Center Integrated Home Automation (CeDInt) attached to the School Senior Telecommunications Engineers (ETSIT) and comprised of students from different schools of the university.

The proposal of the Polytechnic University of Madrid takes the characteristics of Mediterranean culture. Www.solar.etsit.upm.es

experience in the push to supply solar energy industry. This is thanks to the budgets and state support that have their maximum expression in the Plataforma Solar de Almeria, experimenting with prototypes that want to harness this energy source. The government also supports those who generate clean and renewable energy by subsidizing its production to stimulate the growth of this sector.

PHOTOVOLTAIC SOLAR ENERGY: 69% growth in Europe and 43% in Spain in 2004 under European Institute EurObserv'ER.

Germany was in 2004 the world's largest market with 363 MW in the country. Installation is the leader in the past year, ahead of Japan with 280 MW and 90 MW U.S.. The solar energy in Spain has the highest potential for investment in Europe

SOLAR THERMAL 20% in Europe and 29% in Spain.

In Spain, according to association data ESTIF, the English market grew by 63 MWt in 2004, representing an increase of 29%, thanks to solar ordinances governing in almost 40 municipalities. The year ended with 80 MW c cumulative ESTIF predicts that 2005 may end up with 105 MWt (160,000 m2). Galicia tripled solar energy, but remains at the tail of Spain

In Germany, traditional leader of solar thermal in Europe (47% of the total installed), growth was lower than expected: 525 kWt added in 2004 This represents an increase of 4%. By contrast, the year was very good in Greece, with 151 MWt installed (34% increase) ahead of Austria and placed in second position. Austria joined 128 MWt and even Greece in terms of power solar thermal per capita: 179 kWt per 1,000 inhabitants in both countries.

Photovoltaic Solar Energy to sell electricity

Bill Clinton, former U.S. president, on Thursday held the first meeting of the Global Initiative leading Your Name in New York with Bill Gates, Kofi Annan and others.

Question: Is there any contradiction between its objectives of economic growth and environmental protection?

Bill Clinton:
The answer that comes to mind is yes. But we must also say that it is possible to create wealth without destroying the environment. That's the big challenge. Worldwide, water reserves are diminishing, fertile soils erode and seed production shows a downward trend.

Therefore, one of the main purposes of my initiative is to find ways to turn environmental conservation in a way to achieve economic prosperity. Otherwise, the reaction of the people of China and India, for example, will be very negative. Perhaps they think that environmental conservation is a trap in the U.S. and Europe to prevent their countries' economic growth. For this reason, we encourage use of solar energy and wind energy, and help spread very productive farming techniques that help us conserve water and soil.

That way, people will understand that conservation is not going to become poor, but rich. Another beneficial consequence that raise the standard of living of the population is what the statistics: as countries get richer, reduces population growth.
