solar energy into chemical fuel can be stored for long periods and transported over long distances. This is the great achievement made by a group of scientists working on the project SOLZINC, according to the newsletter here Europe.




SOLZINC is partly financed with European funds within the V EU Framework Programme, and involves five partners: PROM-CNRS (France), ScanArc Plasma Systems AB (Sweden), ZOXY Energy Systems AG ( Germany), Paul Scherrer Institute and the Institute of Energy Technology, ETH (Switzerland), Weizmann Institute of Science (Israel).

Its main objective is to develop a solar chemical reactor technology for the production of zinc. The mineral thus obtained offers the possibility to store and transport solar energy. Is a compact solid fuel which has applications for fuel cells and zinc-air batteries. Zinc may also react with water to form high purity hydrogen. In any case, the chemical energy generating these processes is the zinc oxide which, in turn, reduces the solar energy to zinc.

The first tests of the pilot plant, located in the Weizmann Institute of Science Israel, used by 30% of available solar energy and produced 45 kilos of zinc an hour, exceeding targets. The investigations will continue this summer and is expected to industrial-size plants to be developed from this prototype to reach efficiency levels of between 50 and 60%.

The success of this solar chemistry pilot project opens the way towards an efficient thermo-chemical process that allows the storage of solar energy, transportation fuel as chemical and marketing.
