The contest runs until October 16, there have been 18 American universities and the Polytechnic University of Madrid as the only European representative. Each has been designed and built a home that runs exclusively on solar energy. Each house has been transported to the National Mall in Washington DC, and you can visit a village site where the competition is taking place this autumn 2005.

The University Solar Decathlon competition is organized by the Department of Energy of the United States. The intention is to demonstrate how to reconcile the architectural practices with a rational use of energy in a country accustomed to wasting energy. In this case you can only use solar energy efficient technologies and applications that will make our house a home equipped with the comforts of XXI century, but demonstrating that it can respect the health of our mother earth. The solar village will be open from 7 to October 16, 2005. The team houses are open for visiting daily except Oct. 12 when it closed for competition purposes. Final winner will be announced at noon on October 15.
Decathlon: Competition from 10 tests
university teams will compete in ten events that make up the Decathlon and covering aspects such as architectural design, roominess, comfort, energy balance and the like. Include hot water applications, cooling, lighting and other applications. The house can only be supplied with solar energy, but one of the most spectacular and futuristic requirements is that the house should include power for an electric car.
